E85 is the term for motor fuel blends of 85 percent ethanol and just 15 percent gasoline. E85 is an alternative fuel. Ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline; it is a completely renewable, domestic, environmentally friendly fuel that enhances the nation’s economy and energy dependence. The differences between a FFV (flexible fuel vehicle) and a regular gas-only model are that in the FFV a fuel sensor must be added that detects the ethanol/gas ratio. Ethanol contains alcohol, and alcohol fuels can be more corrosive than gasoline. Therefore, any part that comes in contact with the fuel has been upgraded to be tolerant to alcohol and ethanol-compatible. Normally, these parts include a stainless steel fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel injectors, computer system, anti-siphon device and Teflon-lined hoses. If you accidentally put E85 in your gas-only vehicle, although no problems should occur, it is recommended that only FFVs us E85.
